  • Constitution Day - Speeches and other events are held commemorating this National Holiday

  • Benito Jarez's Birthday - This is a National Holiday honoring the President of the 19th Century reform movement in Mexico.

    Late March

  • Vernal Equinox - This is a major event at Chichen Itza as people from around the world come to visit the main temple and witness the descent of the serpent known as Kukulkan. Mayan History states that the Maya people constructed this temple at Chichen Itza such that during the equinoz, a beam of sunlight creates a shadow moving down towards earth resembling a slithering snake. This occurance is supposed to bring out a good harvest.

    March or April

  • Holy Week and Easter - Celebrations and processions in observance of Christ's resurrection.

    May 5

  • Cinco de Mayo - This is a National Holdiay commemorating Mexico's defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

  • Cancun Jazz Festival - This is run by the Cancun Promotions Board and is scheduled for each Memorial Day Weekend.

    September 16

  • Independence Day - Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain in 1821. Fireworks, folk dancing, mariachi bands and much more play a part in this National holiday.

  • Day of the Dead - Traditionally it was believed that the spirits of the deceased returned to earth on this day. On this day, deceased relatives and friends are honored in a party-like celebration including graveside picnics.

  • Christmas Week Celebrations - The festivities include breaking of pinatas, candlelight processions, nightly posadas which are reenactments of the time Joseph and Mary were searching for lodging and a two day feast commemorating the Virgin de la Soledad.
