Welcome to Merida, Mexico
The City of Merida is the Capital of the State, known as "The White City". There are old and modern buildings, which give the city a contrasting character. There are several tourist attractions, such as the Montejo House, on the upper side of the Main Plaza, characterized by its silver style. The Cathedral, in Arabic style with an image of Jesus Christ 7 meters (22 feet) high. The Canton Palace, built at the beginning of the twentieth century (made of polychromatic marble pieces) where the History and Anthropology Museum is located, as well as the Centenary Park, where the famous city zoo is located.
You can go shopping to the market area, where there are traditional embroidered "huipiles", "guayaberas", shirts and "henequen" woven rugs, among other handicrafts. Some miles away from the City of Merida, the most famous city of the Mayan world:
Chichen Itza is located a few miles from Merida. Several groups occupied this city in different times. However, its peak was between 600 and 900 AC.
According to ancient chronicles, it was occupied later by the Itzaes, about the year 1000. From this time the monuments show the influence of the civilizations of the Mesoamerican high-plains.
In this archaeological area there are many buildings, some of the most remarkable ones are "El Castillo" (the Castle), "El Juego de Pelota" (The Ball Game), Los Guerreros (The Warriors) Temple, El Conjunto de las Mil Columnas (One Thousand Columns Complex) and El Caracol (The Winkle). Near this place there are the Sacred Cenote (deep well) and a grout system, most of them unexplored.
