- UXMAL:
his is the city where the Mayan "Puuc" architectonic style reached its peak. It is know as "the three times constructed" city, as its structure was built in three different historic stages: the pre-classic (2500 BC to 200 AC), classic (200-900 AC) and the post classic (900-1500).
Among its most important buildings is the "nuns quadrant", the Governor's Palace, majestically decorated with stone mossaic, that shows the splendor of their artistic expression.
- PROGRESO:
This lovely city, with a long fishing tradition, was founded in the nineteenth century and today is the main harbor in Yucatan. The sea is appropriate for swimming, sailing and boat racing.
You can also enjoy sport fishing in one of its splendid Yacht clubs and marinas located across from the Yucalpeten tourist area.
Among its many attractions, you can visit the Government Palace, the Lighthouse and its concrete dock, considered to be the largest in the world.
Chicxulub and Chelem are two famous destinations, ideal to spend a relaxed vacation during the summer.
- CHICHEN ITZA:
This important Mayan ceremonial center, located east of the city of Merida, with splendorous buildings like the Kukulkan pyramid, built to represent the Mayan calendar is one place worth visiting. Every spring during the equinox, the sunlight reproduces the figure of a feathered snake going down the stairs of the pyramid.
There are other important sites to see, such as the ball game, the thousand column temple, the "Tableros" temple, the red house and the Observatory.
Also, there are two beautiful "cenotes" (deep wells), named "Sagrado" and "X'Toloc".
- CELESTUN:
Considered to be a natural reserve, with some small islands, natural wells and underwater currents. It is located 96 kilometers west of Merida.
Its biggest attraction is the famous estuary surrounded by mangroves swamps and jungle vegetation. Warm temperatures help sea animals to reproduce, as they are vital food for pink flameningos, which need shallow water spaces protected from waves and flooding.
- SAYIL:
This is one the region's oldest cities. Located in a small valley, it is 2 kilometers wide, it goes from the ball game court to the Government Palace. There is only one street to get everywhere in town.
The most important building in Sayil is the palace, a splendid contrast between magnificence and simplicity.
- KABAH:
This town, yet partially unexplored, is about 2 kilometers long (1.5 miles) long. It is located very close to Uxmal, communicated with to it by a cobblestone road called Sacbe, which divides Kabah into two sections.
- DZIBILCHALTUN:
Here is the famous Xlacac natural well, located in the middle of the ceremonial area, where there is also an open chapel built by the end of the sixteenth century.
You can also visit the Site Museum, Where a splendorous spectacle, produced during the spring equinox can be observed when sunlight illuminates the place through the windows.
- LOLTUN CAVERNS:
These caverns are worth the view. A 500 meters lighted trip, where you can observe rooms decorated with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and cave paintings.
- ARRECIFE ALACRANES:
This is a one of a kind coral reef, ideal for scuba diving. With great visibility and about 20 meters (60 feet) depth, you will have the chance to watch coral banks and about 250 sunken ships.
You must arrive by boat from Puerto Progreso, but only after you get an authorization from The National Environmental Institute.
